FAQs

Basic

▸ How do I use the handwriting recognition?
Make sure that you are in the Japanese-English mode (the button on the top left corner should be "J/E"). Then, tap the handwriting button on the top right corner on the iPhone or above the keyboard on the iPad.

To get the handwriting recognition to work perfectly, try drawing as close to the stroke diagrams you see on the kanji pages as possible.
▸ How do I view the kanji stroke order animation?
On a kanji detail page, tap the big kanji on the top left of the screen.
▸ How do I go back to the front page quickly?
▸ How do I search backwards?
Add * or * in front of the keyword. For example, *学校.
▸ How do I look up words from other apps?
Use midori://search?text=...

For example,
  • midori://search?text=食べる
  • midori://search?text=taberu
  • midori://search?text=字

Bookmarks

▸ How do I share bookmarks?
  1. Go to the Bookmarks tab, and make sure you are not inside any folder.
  2. Tap the action button, choose Share > MIDORI, then email the file to the device you would like to import bookmarks.
  3. Open the email and open the file, then choose Import.
If you would like to share a specific folder, you can go inside that folder and do the same steps.
▸ How do I sync bookmarks between an iPhone and an iPad?
Midori doesn't support bookmark syncing yet, but you can achieve the same results by the following steps:
  1. On the iPhone, go to the Bookmarks tab, and make sure you are not inside any folder.
  2. Tap the action button, choose Share > MIDORI, then email the file to yourself.
  3. Open the email on the iPad and open the file, then choose Import.
Your iPad will now have bookmarks from both devices.

Then, do the same steps but in the opposite direction, i.e. share bookmarks from the iPad to the iPhone. Your iPhone will now have bookmarks from both devices.

Flashcards

▸ How do I create flashcards?
You can create flashcards in two ways:
  1. Go to a kanji list and tap the action button on the top right corner. Then tap Flashcards

  2. Go to a bookmark list and tap the action button on the top right corner. Then tap Flashcards

▸ How do I use the spaced repetition system in flashcards?
When you start flashcards, set the order of flashcards to Spaced Repetition like in the screenshot below. If the flashcards have already started, tap the action button, choose Options and set the order to Spaced Repetition. Then tap Start or Save.

At the start, Midori puts the first 10 cards in the deck. You must answer each card correctly three times in a row. After you answer a card correctly three times in a row, that card will be taken out of the deck and a new card will be put into the deck.

The more you answer correctly, the less often you will be tested. You can also answer "strongly correct" by swiping up the check mark (✔) button.

▸ How do I look up a word in a flashcard?
Perform the pinch gesture (zoom-in gesture) on the card.
